Hydroelectric: How It Works [Diversion]

Impoundment         Diversion

Diversion
Diversion plants channel river water directly through a penstock (a large pipe that houses a turbine in the middle). The moving water spins the turbine to generate electricity before flowing back into the river. These plants do not require a dam and have minimal impact on the surrounding environment relative to Impoundment dams.
